Three Technical University of Kenya from the School of Computing and Information Technologies(SCIT) won the third prize at the 2020 Inter University Cyber Security Contest held on Friday, 20th November 2020 in Nairobi. The fourth - year Bachelor of Technology in Communication and Computer Networks students appearing for the first time were awarded a cash prize of kshs. 20,000.
SCIT was represented by Martin Kabiru, Debris Kiplanagt and Felix Bosire in the competition that tested the students ability in the identification of bugs and vulnerabilities in computer systems.Expressing their excitement, the team acknowledged that the win was a ‘’big surprise and a pride to the university’’.
According to Mrs. G. L . Okundi from SCIT, a bigger team from the school will participate in next year's contest. The initiative has also led the school to start a Cybersecurity Club, which is open to all Computing students at TU-K. Upon resumption of normalcy after the COVID- 19 pandemic, the club will hold mentorship programs, address cybersecurity challenges, teach students hacking skills and hold internal Cybersecurity competitions among students from SCIT. The overall event winner was KCA University while JKUAT took the second position. The competing students from TU-K were under patronage of Dr. Salesio Kiura and Mrs. Grace Leah Okundi.
