Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology
The Department of Computer Communication and Networks offers courses on communication and computer networks, orientating the students towards telecommunications industry for roles that involve set up, configuration and administration of modern networks. The students are as well grounded in computer science foundational courses and introduced to programming and systems design. Organisations today thrive by being parts of networks that span organizations, across sectors and utilizing information resources spread across wide spans of networked people, systems, processes and infrastructures. To support the inter-connectivity of the organizations and the accompanying computer systems, there is a need for professionals in the respective areas. Communication between computers is thus today a major area of study with unique issues to be addressed and diverse applications in telecommunications and other networks. It is estimated that the next frontiers for computer technology development are mobile and ubiquitous computing. These are technologies that will rely on superior computer communication systems. Moreover, recent advances in technology such as Internet of Things (IoT), Autonomous systems, Distributed Ledger Technologies (BlockChain), Data Analytics and high performance computing are at the core enabled and supported by a robust networking infrastructure. Computer communication systems thus constitute a major area of projected growth in the computer industry that deserves special attention in academic programmes and research within the discipline of computing and informatics.
The curriculum was reviewed to incorporate IoT course content into BTech curriculums in the School of Computing. The grant has helped us train almost 100 students on IoT in three cohorts. The grant also helped us develop IoT course content and associated introductory notes.
The course entails numerous lab assignments for students and a project to be done to have students solve real-world problems. The course outline and course module on IoT are shared in the links below:-
